The first day of preschool is a milestone for the whole family — exciting, emotional, and much easier when you have prepared in stages rather than in one frantic week. Here is a calm, step-by-step checklist for Singapore parents, drawn from what we see work for families joining Genius Gems.

Two to Three Months Before: Choose Well and Settle the Paperwork

1. Shortlist and visit centres. Nothing beats standing in the classroom. Watch how teachers interact with children and ask about class sizes, the curriculum, and daily routines — our guide to the five questions to ask on a preschool visit covers the essentials.
2. Confirm the practical fit. Check operating hours against your work schedule (ours are 7:00am–7:00pm on weekdays), and do the commute once at rush hour. East-side families can find directions to our Changi centre by MRT, bus, and car.
3. Sort out fees and subsidies early. Eligible Singaporean families can receive the Basic Subsidy of $300/month for full-day childcare, and an Additional Subsidy of up to $467/month depending on household income. One Month Before: Build the Routines

4. Shift the body clock gently. Move bedtime and wake-up time gradually toward the school-day schedule, so the first week isn't a battle against tiredness.
5. Practise small independence skills. Eating with a spoon, drinking from a cup, washing hands, trying to put on shoes — each small skill your child can do alone makes the school day feel more manageable to them. Teachers will support the rest.
6. Talk about school — positively and concretely. Read picture books about starting school, walk or drive past the centre, and talk about the fun specifics: the playground, water play, singing, new friends. Avoid framing school as something to be brave about; frame it as something to look forward to.

One Week Before: The Practical Countdown

7. Prepare and label everything. Uniforms (at Genius Gems, new Full Day students receive two sets free and Half Day students one), a change of clothes, water bottle, and any comfort item — all labelled with your child's name.
8. Do a meet-the-teacher visit if offered. A familiar face on day one changes everything. When you enrol with us, we encourage a settling-in visit so your child has already seen their classroom and met their teachers.
9. Plan the first-week logistics. If you can, arrange shorter days or an earlier pick-up for the first few days, and decide in advance which parent or grandparent does drop-off — consistency helps.

The First Day (and Week): Keep Goodbyes Short and Warm

Expect some tears — sometimes yours more than theirs. The settled routine that works: arrive with time to spare, hand your child to the teacher with a confident smile, give one warm and brief goodbye, and go. Lingering, or slipping away secretly, both tend to make separation harder. Most children settle within a couple of weeks, and our small classes mean a teacher is always close enough to comfort and redirect a wobbly moment quickly.

Common Worries — and Why They're Normal

"My child cries at every goodbye." Separation anxiety is a healthy sign of attachment, not a verdict on your parenting or the school. With a consistent routine and warm teachers, it almost always fades within weeks.

"My child is a fussy eater." Children often eat foods at school — surrounded by peers doing the same — that they refuse flatly at home. Tell the centre about genuine dietary requirements, then let the group effect work its quiet magic.

"My child isn't fully toilet-trained / still naps at odd times." Preschool teachers manage these transitions every single year. Share where your child is, and let the centre meet them there; routines at school often accelerate progress at home.

"My child barely speaks Mandarin." That is precisely what an immersive bilingual environment is for. Children who arrive with little or no Mandarin absorb it remarkably quickly when they hear it used naturally every day.

A Note on Choosing the Right Start Date

There is no perfect month to start preschool, but avoid stacking transitions — a new sibling, a house move, and a first day of school in the same fortnight is a lot for a small person. If you are flexible, ask the centre which intake periods tend to be calmer.
